The Low Anthem is a folk and rock trio from Providence, RI who take influence from old gospel and folk tunes, Tom Waits, Neil Young, and Nick Drake. They are known for their eclectic instruments and a combination of thoughtful ballads with raw, minimalist rock. In September, the band self-released their third album Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, which has been critically acclaimed in Paste magazine, NPR, BBC, and The Boston Globe. The record is a thematic 12-song work, recorded in the cold, bare stillness of a Block Island winter. The abandoned tourist destination was a haven of peace and quiet. The only sounds were the rush of sea wind against the panes of the cabin and the crackling hum of the woodstove. 10 sleepless days and nights. Hundreds of live takes. Many bottles of bourbon. These were the record’s principle ingredients. Since Oh My God, Charlie Darwin’s release, The Low Anthem has toured with Rachael Yamagata, Lisa Hannigan and Ray Lamontagne, and have been compared to everyone from The Band to Fleet Foxes to “a late-night ride home in Joni Mitchell's car.” (NPR)
